We've been so busy with school and weddings, this is the first time we have got down to the Abbey for over a week! There was a beautiful red sky this morning, hinting at things to come, and sure enough, by lunch time the white stuff was coming down from the sky, so we thought we'd venture out, and see if any of it settled, but it just turned to rain by the time we got here!
Abbey Mill looked comforting in the gloom, and did seem to be quite busy!
A very wierd looking fungus- is it called a 'stink horn'?
Tthe electricity guys were working in the field by the railway cottage today- there has been a generator in the garden for a while now- maybe his supply has been disrupted somehow- it must be rather scary in that cottage at night, without any electricity!
The light was quite strange down here today- you often get that before snow, so we climbed up high to get these photos from various angles.
A dead tree leaning on a living one, way up at the top of the ampitheatre.
The trees were absolutely dripping today. No crisp white snow yet!!
This was taken at the top of the ampitheatre again- starlings roosting- and it looks similar to our back garden. We try to put out food for the small birds and the doves, but the 'yobo' starlings sit in the trees and come down on a mass raid as soon as we go in!
English Heritage have decided to close the Abbey buildings to the public for a while, so that they can try and manage the soaking wet ground and see what is to be done! I hope it is open by the summer- we have groups of kids to bring down- you can't attend a Barrow school and not visit the Abbey at least once!
