31st October 2012

Pouring with rain at 1pm today and the place is deserted! The Red River is running high, but even though it is quiet, there is no sign of the heron we saw fishing the other day(when we DIDN'T have the camera!).

We did spot this finch protecting it's territory and berries. we are not quite sure what kind of a finch it is??
Frankie used to think this old entrance hut was where Percy Park Keeper lived (from the Nick Butterworth stories), and he always sat on the step waiting for him to come out, like he does in 'One Snowy Night'! Then he transferred his beliefs to Tom, who used to be groundsman here- HE then became Percy for a while!!

The ash leaves underfoot look pretty healthy at the Abbey- no sign of the dreaded fungus that seems to be afflicting the ash trees in the south.

There are some lovely old trees along the paths here, I think this one must be a couple of hundred years old at least! It looks like the rain has caused some sort of slippage onto the railway line here, it wasn't there yesterday- it's red clay!

Finally, the good old Abbey.... in the rain! We thought we might come down after six o'clock tonight and get some ghostly pictures... depending on the weather!

October 30th 2012

A bit wet and windy at the Abbey this morning, and there is smoke coming from Abbey Mill's chimney so the woodburner is working hard inside.
We decided to have our lunch whilst here today- bacon and sausage baps from Abbey Mill cafe- delicious- and best eaten out in the open!

It is quite autumnal here this morning, with plenty of leaves and fungi to look at as you walk along. There is a hallowe'en event here tomorrow night, and if the weather stays this moody, it will be very atmospheric and spooky- Frankie doesn't want to come because he is afraid of seeing ghostly monks he says!

We captured the 11.30am train heading into Barrow, quite a picturesque part of it's journey.

Don't forget to buy your poppy to show support for the armed forces past and present!

October 29th 2012

Oops! The Abbey Mill Cafe has been missed off the photo today, but is still there, and still thriving- very busy as it is half-term!

The trees are turning lovely shades of orange and brown now, and although the sun is shining, the temperature is only 9 degrees. Autumn is finally here!

Frankie decided to have a 'leaf fight' with his dad, just on that path that leads to the railway crossing. It's about 2.30pm and the clocks have now gone back for the winter!

The light has gone from this side of the ampitheatre now, even though it is only 2.30pm.

October 7th 2012

Although it is sunny, there is a distinct feel of autumn in the air, and the leaves are starting to turn a bit crisp around their edges. The meadow has been cut, although Frankie is convinced that it has been well grazed by cows and sheep since we were last here!
A nice bit of October sunshine!

Paula and Frankie at school today so Steve Hillman out and about with his camera during dense fog at the Abbey!

                                                                                Spooky!!

September 9th 2012

Back at school now, so we have to visit the Abbey at weekends. As usual, we had an 'Indian Summer' once back at school, so we are still in shirt sleeves, and there were a lot of people visiting today!

                                         No sign of Autumn yet!!

Steve Hillman has to take 'arty' shots wherever he goes!

Welcome to our BLOG!

Hi. We have been visiting Furness Abbey in Barrow for such a long time now, and discussing the changes we see as the seasons roll along, so we decided to share our thought and photos with everyone. We started the blog in late August, and will continue to visit and photograph throughout the year- you've probably seen us down there if you are a regular visitor, so why not share you thoughts with us...!
Here is Paula and Frankie on 23rd August, outside the Abbey Mill Cafe. A fairly warm late August day!

Same day, grass cutting inside the Abbey.
